What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit with Dr. Rob
If you've never been to a chiropractor before, it's normal to feel a little unsure about what you're walking into. Will it hurt? How long will it take? What will the doctor actually do? These are the questions I hear most often — so I wrote this to answer all of them before you even walk through the door.
Your First Visit at a Glance
Your first appointment is all about understanding you — your history, your goals, and what your body needs. Here's what the experience looks like from start to finish.
1. Arrival & Paperwork
When you arrive, you'll complete a brief health history form. This helps me understand your current concerns, past injuries, medications, and overall health. Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early if completing paperwork in the office, or complete it online in advance if I've sent you a link.
2. Your Consultation
Before beginning our exam, I'll take a few minutes to ask for some additional details about what brings you into the office. There are no wrong answers — the more detail you can share, the better I can help.
Common topics we'll cover:
- Primary complaint — Where are you hurting? When did it start? What makes it better or worse?
- Health history — Past injuries, surgeries, chronic conditions
- Goals — What does success look like for you? Pain relief? Better sleep? Getting back to a sport or activity? Or maybe you currently don't have any symptoms and just want to maintain a body that works well long-term.
3. Your Examination
Once I understand what's been going on, I'll perform a thorough examination to figure out exactly what's happening in your body. This typically includes:
- Postural assessment — How your body is aligned at rest
- Range of motion testing — How well your spine and joints move
- Orthopedic & neurological tests — To rule out serious conditions and identify the source of your problem
- Spinal palpation — Hands-on assessment to locate areas of restriction or dysfunction
X-rays may be recommended based on your history and exam findings. If needed, I'll discuss this with you before proceeding.
4. What I'm Finding
As I work through the exam, I'll talk you through what I'm noticing in plain language — no confusing jargon, no waiting until the end. You'll start to understand:
- What's going on and why you're experiencing your symptoms
- What I'm thinking in terms of care and next steps
A more detailed review of findings and a full care plan will happen at your second visit, but you won't leave from your first visit in the dark.
5. Your First Adjustment (in most cases)
If it's appropriate on your first visit, you may receive your first chiropractic adjustment. This is a precise, controlled movement applied to specific joints to restore normal motion and relieve the irritated nerves and tense muscles causing your pain.
Will it hurt? This is one of the most common questions I hear — and it's a fair one. For most patients, the adjustment itself is not painful. You may feel a mild stretch, a sense of pressure, or a brief pop as the joint moves — and some of the techniques I use require no joint popping at all. Many people feel immediate relief. Some experience mild soreness afterward — similar to how your muscles feel after a good workout — which typically resolves within 24–48 hours. If you're nervous, just tell me. I'll walk you through every step, and there's nothing I'll do without explaining it first.
First adjustments are typically gentle. I'll always choose the approach that's right for your body and check in with you throughout.
